US 60 Phase I-A/B Alignment Study, Milepost 325 to 383 (Fort Sumner to Clovis)
Control Number 2104660
Overall Study Corridor
The Study consists of a Phase IA/B Report that will examine needed improvements in the Study corridor, including upgrading the existing roadway with passing lanes and other safety enhancements, Americans with Disability Act facilities, drainage improvements, roadway lighting and signals, and right-of-way as required. Heavy truck traffic uses the US 60 corridor as a gateway from I-40 (Santa Rosa) to Eastern New Mexico and West Texas. Agricultural uses are significant in the tri-county Study area. The two-lane rural section between the small communities limits passing opportunities, thereby causing congestion and platooning, decreased speeds, travel time increases, and higher fuel costs. The corridor also has a significant crash rate, including recent fatalities.
The Study will identify existing conditions, fully define the purpose and need, and consider various alternatives to address issues in the corridor. It will then define priorities for Study development and evaluate more specific treatments for each section or issue. Once priorities are defined, environmental documentation and preliminary design will be advanced for the selected projects in subsequent phases.
